Handheld sales have dropped across the board, while the release of two key games, Final Fantasy XIII-2 (which has has been available in Japan for two months) and SoulCalibur V, has helped increase software sales of the HD twins. Three games debuted in the top 40 this week. SoulCalibur V for the PlayStation and Xbox 360 is this week’s top debut, with combined sales of 386,000.
Software milestones this week in the top 40: Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) has passed the one million mark.
Hardware sales are flat for the Xbox 360 and down for every other platform week on week and year on year sales are down for every platform. The 3DS is the top selling platform as it passed the 16 million mark. The Wii passed the 95 million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week sales are flat for the Xbox 360 and down for every other platform. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 244,000, a decrease of 22,000 (-8%). The PlayStation 3 is down 6,000 (-3%) to 199,000 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are flat at 168,000 units sold. The Wii sold 110,000 units, which is down 9,000 (-8%). The DS is down 2,000 (-3%) to 61,000 units. The PSP sold 58,000 units, which is down 6,000 (-9%). The Vita sold 20,000, which is down 2,000 (-9%). Total week on week sales are down 47,000 (-5%) to 860,000.
Year on year sales are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 is down 31,000 (-13%), the Wii is down 72,000 (-40%), and the Xbox 360 is down 38,000 (-18%). The PSP is down 56,000 (-49%) and the DS is down a massive 1135,000 (-69%). However with the DS and 3DS combined it is up 109,000 compared to the DS one year ago. Total year on year sales are down 68,000 (-7%).
Xbox 360 hardware sales after dropping for five straight weeks have stabilized this week, while the PlayStation 3 and Wii which saw sales rise a little week, dropped a little this week. Home console hardware sales have been relatively stable for the last four weeks, with only minor dips and increases. The PlayStation 3 has a 42 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 35 percent market share; and the Wii has a 23 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 is in first for a sixth week, while the Xbox 360 is in second for a fourth week. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The gap between the 3DS and PSP / DS has shrunk this week. It has outsold the DS by 4 to 1 and the PSP by more than 4 to 1. The DS has a 51 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 49 percent. The Vita has just an eight percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the 3DS holds the other 92 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago all three platforms (excluding the Vita) are down.
Worldwide Software
Three games debuted in the top 40 this week. SoulCalibur V (PS3) debuted at number three with sales of 210,000. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number four with sales of 176,000. The game had a worldwide launch.
PhotoKano (PSP) debuted at number 30 with sales of 33,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
Ragnarok Odyssey (PSV) debuted at number 32 with sales of 32,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) at number one with sales of 860,000. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (X360) is at number two with sales of 348,000. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (PS3) is at number five with sales of 133,000.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 106,000. Just Dance 3 (Wii) at number seven with sales of 104,000. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) is at number eight sales of 97,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) is at number nine with sales of 94,000. Zumba Fitness (Wii) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 89,000.
Week on week software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and are down for the Wii, DS, PSP, 3DS, and PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with 3.13 million games sold, an increase of 949,000 (44%). The Xbox 360 sold 2.45 million games, an increase of 368,000 (18%). Wii software sales are down 190,000 (-10%) to 1.69 million. The DS sold 776,000 games, which is down 138,000 (-15%). The 3DS sold 342,000 games, a decrease of 224,000 (-30%). PSP game sales are down 13,000 (-4%) to 342,000 games sold. The Vita sold 56,000 games, a decrease of 17,000 (-23%). Total combined software is up 735,000 (9%) week on week to 8.96 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 1.23 million (65%), the Wii is down 620,000 (-27%) and the Xbox 360 is up 657,000 (37%). The DS is down 735,000 (-49%) and the PSP is down 341,000 (-50%). Total combined software is up 760 (9%) games sold year on year.
The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot in software sales for second week in a row. The Xbox 360 has lead for five of the last 10 weeks and the Wii for three weeks. The PlayStation 3 has a 43 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 34 percent, and the Wii with 23 percent. Compared to ten weeks all three home consoles are down.
All four handhelds remain in the same positions for total software. The DS is in first, 3DS in second, PSP in third and the Vita in last. The DS has a 69 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 31 percent market share. The 3DS has a 90 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has just a 10 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three platforms (excluding the Vita) are down.
