Of the four major debuts lastweek, New Super Mario Bros Wii has had the most gracious fall, toppingall but three Wii debuts in Japan in its second week. With the New Yearcoming, most hw is up too.                    Summary & A Look Ahead:
Ahead of the Final Fantasy XIII launch in Japan, software salesremained brisk. New Super Mario Bros Wii fell to ~45% of its massiveweek one total, a very healthy drop which all but assures that thetitle will have big legs for months, as expected. Alongside Mario, Callof Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – across PS3 and X360 - and Tales of Graceseach debuted to about 150,000 units. The major PSP titles from lastweek, Gundam vs. Gundam, and Phantasy Star Portable 2 fell rathersharply from their first week, partly because they are sequels, andperhaps because of the Go as well.
Nintendo’s Tamodatchi Collection rose substantially from last week, and nearly topped 100,000 units once again. The game has yet to dropbelow ~50,000 in a week despite launching over five months ago. It isgetting to Brain Training-like territory. Some other titles arebeginning to exhibit holiday behavior as well. PokePark, Wii Fit Plusand Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver all saw increased sales over theprevious week.
Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII has about 800,000 preorders as ofDecember 13. The game currently looks like it will top out at about875,000 to 925,000 preorders, in line with the recent reports thatSquare-Enix will allocate retailers 1 million copies for day one andthen have 300,000 additional games ready by December 20. RPGs don’tusually increase much from day one in Japan, so 1.2m to 1.3m week lookslike about right for Final Fantasy XIII week one, with the major caveatthat an unexpectedly high/low increase in preorder rate over the nextfew days can changes this substantially. Still, I had said New SuperMario Bros Wii would have a shot at a million week one several weeksago, and it only missed by about 6%.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken downinto charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additionalcategories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the leftwill be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold forthe week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highestamount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data ispreliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. Thevarying platform market share the sample represents is why consistentsellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending December 13, 2009.
Software by Platform:
Wii Software – The Wii had another good week for software. New SuperMario Bros Wii fell to 417,000 in its second week. For those curious, the second week of New Super Mario Brothers Wii is still higher thanevery Wii debut in Japan save for Monster Hunter 3, Super Smash BrosBrawl, and Mario Kart Wii. In second place for the week was Tales ofGraces at 149,000 units up about 10% from Tales of Symphonia Wii.PokePark Wii rose to 70,000 units this week after selling almost 60,000units last week in two days. Wii Fit Plus (the game only) increased to63,000 units for the week. Samurai Warriors 3 had only one of its fourskus chart in the data – but it came in at 26,000 units. With the otherthree skus, the game should be right around 40,000 units. MomotarouDentetsu 2010 also reappeared in the data, with sales at 18,000 units.Wii hardware sales should remain in the 100,000 to 110,000 unit range,as the NSMB Wii drop off is counteracted by Tales and seasonal hardwarelifts.
