Big week in Japan - all twenty games in thepreliminary data sold over 10,000 units. Winning Eleven and the newProfessor Layton sold a combined 400,000 units. DS may yet over takePSP sales in Japan for 2008 if this week is an indication of December

Jacob Mazel

Summary:

Top twenty software sales in Japan are downslightly from last week. Nonetheless, the top twenty games in thepreliminary data add up to over 1m units of software sold. ProfessorLayton (DS) and Winning Eleven 2009 (PS3) accounted for 40% of thesoftware sold in the top twenty, but there were a fair number of otherbig debuts for the week, especially on PSP. Interestingly, PS2 and Xbox360 software were squeezed out of the preliminary top twenty althoughthat likely won’t be the case in the final data.

Key Points:

-
Portableplatforms continue to sell the majority of the software in Japan. Thisweek DS and PSP software accounted for three out of every four gamessold in the top twenty.
-
Amongthe big four debuts last week, Animal Crossing sold the most units thisweek, while Gundam vs. Gundam and Chrono Trigger had normal ‘RPG’drops. The Last Remnant did not chart, due to a sell out at thisretailer.
-
All20 skus in the preliminary data sold over 10,000 units this week, whichis the usual signal that the Japanese holiday season is really startingto ramp up.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending November 30, 2008.

Software by Platform Breakdown:

Wii Software – Both versions of Animal Crossing:City Folk charted this week once again. The only new entrant was fromMarvelous – Rune Factory: Frontier which sold 27,000 units. AnimalCrossing: City Folk sold nearly 90,000 additional units between its twoversions. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 30,000 to 40,000unit range this week.

Xbox 360 Software –Due to what looks like a sell out at this particular retailer, The LastRemnant did not chart after debuting to sales of 100,000 units lastweek. Since no company would be stupid enough to let a nationwidesellout of a big game happen in its second week, expect the game to endup in the low five digit range in the final data. Expect Xbox 360hardware sales to drop into the 9,000 to 15,000 unit range this week.

PS2 Software – No PS2titles charted in the preliminary data. Expect PS2 hardware sales toremain in the 4,000 to 8,000 unit range this week.

PSP Software – PSP hadfive new titles chart this week. A new Yu-Gi-Oh game sold over 80,000units, while the four other new titles sold between 20,000 and 45,000units a piece. Hold over from last week, Gundam vs. Gundam managednearly 50,000 units this week. Expect PSP hardware sales to drop intothe 55,000 to 65,000 unit range this week.

DS Software – TheProfessor is back. Layton’s latest game had a strong debut, at 270,000units this week. Nonetheless, that pace is still a bit less than theweek one sales of the previous game. Coming in second place for DS wasChrono Trigger with another 62,000 units sold. Kirby, the fashion gamefor girls, Sega’s new soccer game and a couple new releases contributedto what remains a very viable DS ecosystem in Japan. Nine games for theDS sold over 10,000 units this week. Though hard to believe just a fewweeks ago, DS has a real shot at outselling PSP in Japan in 2008 now.Expect DS hardware sales to remain in the 100,000 to 125,000 unit rangethis week.
