Softwaresales got a nice boost this week on the first half of Golden Week, buthardware sales were roughly flat for PS3 and Wii due to software drops.

Jacob Mazel

Summary:

Welcome to the first half of Golden Week, a series of Japanese nationalholidays and massive travel which runs from April 29 to May 6. In therealm of gaming, Golden Week usually provides a healthy boost forhardware and software sales in Japan.
However, with big drop offs for key Wii and PS3 drivers this week, hardware sales for those systems should remain flat. In contrast DS andPSP had a large of number of decent sized hits release this week andshould see healthy boosts for the week. PS2 and Xbox 360 fall somewherein between. The second half of Golden Week includes ‘Children’s day’next week should invigorate the Wii and PS3 a bit more than this week, while the other machines see a continuation of elevated sales.

Trends to Watch:

-
The Golden Week rises. Much of the May to June period will bedetermined by the rises of PS3, Wii, PSP and DS over Golden Week. DShas Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest IX for DS to offset any PSP gainsthrough July but on the Wii vs. PS3 front, PS3 has a number of fairlybig titles releasing in late May while Wii has little until Wii SportsResort in June.
-
Monster Hunter G. Capcom probably will base its estimates on theperformance of Monster Hunter G for the Wii. If the game can top300,000 – certainly not a sure thing for an old port – on essentiallythe promise of playing Monster Hunter 3, then Capcom has to like thepotential of Monster Hunter 3 in Japan to top the highest selling PS2version (630k).
-
The Japanese software market. Despite the high profile hits for theyear – Wii Sports Resort, Monster Hunter 3, Dragon Quest IX, FinalFantasy XIII, Yakuza 3, Mario & Luigi 3, Dynasty WarriorsStrikeforce, Resident Evil 5, Kingdom Hearts DS – the Japanese softwaremarket has been down so much that these major titles may not be enoughto prevent further contraction. Through May 3 – a third of the year -the Japanese market should be at about 19m units of software. In 2008,Japanese software totals were 62.4m, in 2007, 70.1m.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying x game for y platform soldbetween 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary datawill be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, therewill two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount thetitle likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. Asalways, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it isbased on a sample. The varying platform market share the samplerepresents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appearin the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending May 3, 2009.

Software by Platform:

Wii Software – Only two Wii titles charted in the preliminary data thisweek. Taiko Wii saw a rise to 13,000 units. Monster Hunter G debutedlast week in two skus in the early sample data. The higher selling sku, which hit 98,000 in the extrapolated data last week disappeared thisweek from the data which suggests either that the higher version of thetitle sold less than 11,000 units (possible, but doubtful) or sold outat this store (likely). Monster Hunter G Single, the lower selling skufrom last week did chart though – and sold 17,000 units. Using theratio of the MHG single drop, and the MHG starter: MHG single ratiofrom last week, the better selling version likely sold about 43,000units for the week, putting both versions at ~60,000 after a ~135,000week one. The Monster Hunter G drop should roughly offset the GoldenWeek holiday. As a result, expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the17,000 to 23,000 unit range for the week.

PS3 Software – Killzone 2 and X Blades were the top selling ‘fullgames’ on PS3 this week, although the FFXIII demo bundled with theFFVII continues to sell well too. Both Killzone 2 and the FFXIII demowere down by half from last week though, and since X Blade did notlight up the chart, PS3 is in the same situation as Wii – dropping keysoftware sales roughly offset by the rise normally associated withGolden Week. As a result, expect PS3 hardware sales to remain in the19,000 to 24,000 unit range this week.
