Hardware sales were up slightly this weekon the debuts of Tiger Woods, Tales of Vesperia, and Mario Baseball. The next few weeks should be quite interesting as the impacts of theXbox 360 price cut become apparent.
Jacob Mazel
After a quiet week in the shadow of the latestMadden, there were five new titles which sold over 40,000 units thisweek. EA, Nintendo, and Namco-Bandai led the charge, with a new TigerWoods on multiple platforms, a Mario baseball game on Wii, and Tales ofVesperia for Xbox 360. With the new releases for the week, totalhardware sales were up slightly from last week. DS saw the biggestincrease for the week, as bundles were introduced to counteract thetypical early fall decline in portable sales after the back to schoolrush. PSP, which had no such measure this week, saw the largest drop ofall platforms. In the ongoing PS3 vs. Xbox 360 battle in the Americas,PS3 outsold its main rival another week, though it is important toremember that this is the last week unaffected by the Xbox 360 pricedrop. Next week, the Xbox 360 should see a slight boost (the price dropwent into effect September 5th , VGC data will be through September 6th) followed by a larger boost the following weeks. The larger boostshould jettison Xbox 360 above PS3 once again as the price advantagewidens.

Year over year sales show two things that explainthe timing of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 price drop in the Americas. Sony hasimproved its total hardware sales by 30,000 units from last year in thecomparable time frame. Nintendo has seen flat sales year over year, with Wii higher last year on the Metroid Prime 3 boost, but DS ishigher this year as it enters its peak season. Microsoft’s positionhowever has shrunk. Last year, Microsoft sold about 95,000 Xbox 360s inthe wake of its first price drop. This year that figure is closer to50,000. To come close to the sales of last year, another price drop wasneeded. Without Halo 3 to move a few extra hundred thousand consoles, but with a cheaper box overall, Xbox 360 sales from September toDecember should be flat to 15% higher than in 2007.

Notes:

Abouta year ago, Blue Dragon launched in the Americas to sales of about60,000 units. It stands at 230,000 units today in the Americas. Talesof Vesperia launched this week in the Americas on Xbox 360 to sales ofabout 58,000 units, so it should have a similar trajectory.
-
Tiger Woods debuted to almost 50,000 units on Wii, close to 72,000 on 360, and at about 41,000 on PS3.
-
Wii Play topped 7.0m in the Americas this week.
-
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is just shy of 1.15m units now. Scary to think how well the next mainline Guitar Hero could do.
-
Wii Fit likely will top 2m in the Americas next week.
-
TooHuman had a steep drop from week one to week two. 400,000 may be astretch for the game unless word of mouth offsets the “mixed” reviews.
-
TheWii and PSP versions of Madden continue to greatly outperform theirprevious iterations. EA should be commended, as Xbox 360 and PS3 alonearen’t quite at the point where they can give Madden the sales it hadon the PS2 & Xbox hey-day.
