NSMB Wii and Inazuma Eleven 2look like they are seeing at least sporadic shortages this week inJapan. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XIII had a nice hold remaining at 120k+.                    Summary & A Look Ahead:

It was another big week in Japan. Six games sold over 100,000 units, down from last week where seven games hit 100,000 but still animpressive figure. Final Fantasy XIII had a respectable hold this weekbecause of holiday sales demand, falling to only 124,000 after droppingover a million units from week one to week two. New Super Mario BrosWii had a much larger drop, falling to 218,000 units for the week ifthe shortages at this retailer are Japan-wide. Next week will betelling – as the game will probably increase if it was supplyconstrained this week otherwise it will decline further.
Overall, it was a very good week for software on Nintendo platforms.Of the twenty slots in the preliminary data, 16 went to games on DS andWii. Interestingly, Inazuma Eleven 2 did not appear at all this week, despite selling ~100,000 units last week – which indicates it toolikely had at least sporadic sellouts this week. Older software such asMario Kart Wii and Monster Hunter Portable 2G also returned to thepreliminary data. In some cases, more recently released software likeWii Sports Resort and Phantasy Star Portable 2 also increased over lastweek.
Next week should be quieter overall despite the release of KingdomHearts: Birth by Sleep for PSP. Kingdom Hearts has roughly 300,000preorders and should debut to sales over 450,000 next week.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken downinto charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additionalcategories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the leftwill be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold forthe week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highestamount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data ispreliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. Thevarying platform market share the sample represents is why consistentsellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending January 3, 2010.
Software by Platform:
Wii Software – Eight Wii games charted in the preliminary data. NewSuper Mario Bros Wii fell to 218,000 units for the week on shortagesbut remained the top seller in Japan both on Wii and overall. Wii FitPlus came in at 110,000 followed by Wii Sports Resort at 86,000. TheWii Play Pack (not the North American/European Wii Play sku which iscalledHajimete no Wii / はじめての Wii rather thanじめてのWiiパック(ジャケット同梱版 as this sku is) debuted to sales of 56,000 units.Pokepark fell to 53,000 units for the week and was closely followed bythe instrument-less edition of Taiko 2 which sold 48,000 units.Momotarou Dentetsu 2010 charted once again and rose to 35,000 units forthe week. Mario Kart Wii also charted, and sold another 34,000 units.Mario & Sonic 2010, Monster Hunter 3, Tales of Graces, SamuraiWarriors 3, Kamen Riders, Wii Sports and a few other Wii games shouldbe over 5,000 units in the final data as well. Expect Wii hardwaresales to rise slightly, into the 215,000 to 255,000 unit range for theweek.

PS3 Software – Final Fantasy XIII was the only PS3 game to chart inthe preliminary data. It sold 124,000 units for the week. The holidayseason in Japan appears to be holding the title up to some degree.Without seasonal factors in play, the game likely would have sold 1.5mweek one, 150k week two, and 80k or so this week. The trade off forthese initial boosts is that the game may have a very short tail butwe’ll have to see. Besides Final Fantasy XIII, Winning Eleven and Callof Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also should be over 5,000 units for the weekin Japan. Expect PS3 hardware sales to remain in the 100,000 to 150,000unit range as the Final Fantasy XIII deterioration is offset by holidayincreases.

Tamodatchi Collection fell to200,000 units, Zelda fell to 124,000 and the Pokemon-combo fell to116,000. Inazuma Eleven 2 appears to have sold out at this retailer asit didn’t chart in the top twenty at all after selling 100,000 lastweek. In the final data it should be anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000depending on how severe its shortage is across Japan. The latestProfessor Layton game fell to 62,000 units.
