Apparently, the zombies have been contained becauseResident Evil 5 had a big drop, knocking off some of the luster in thePS3 & Xbox 360 sales. PSP is down too. But then again, so is DS.
Jacob Mazel
Summary:
Now that the outbreak of Zombies has been contained in Japan, salestrends are beginning to return to normal levels. PS3 had one last pushthough - Musou Orochi Z. Next week, new DSi colors will appear in Japanand should accelerate DS sales once again in Japan. Sometime in thenext month, the Wii should return to outselling PS3, on a greaternumber of game releases and cheaper pricing. In the second half ofApril, Wii and PS3 should both see boosts on Monster Hunter G and theFinal Fantasy XIII demo.
Trends to Watch:
-
The falls. How quickly will PS3 fall after this week? How about Xbox 360? PSP? DS after the new colors?
-
Microsoft. The Xbox 360 will top 1m units in Japan this week. Nextgeneration, Microsoft could actually be positioned to challenge forsecond place in Japan if the company keeps supporting the Xbox 360.
-
Million sellers. What will be the first million seller in Japan for theyear? Dragon Quest IX is the guaranteed game to top one million inJapan for 2009, but the year is already almost a quarter over and nogames are even close to 1m.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform soldbetween 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary datawill be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, therewill two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount thetitle likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. Asalways, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it isbased on a sample. The varying platform market share the samplerepresents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appearin the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending March 15, 2009.
Software by Platform:
Wii Software – The Wii version of Pikmin 2 sold 25,000 units in itslaunch week. Namco-Bandai hit Taiko Wii sold another 18,000 units forthe Wii and the game continues to be one of the biggest third partyhits on the platform in Japan. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain inthe 16,000 to 22,000 unit range this week.

PS3 Software – Three PS3 games charted in the preliminary data. MusouOrochi Z was the top seller for the week, with 107,000 units sold. Withthe strong launch, either the PS3 or Xbox 360 has had the top sellingtitle for four weeks in a row. Nonetheless, the string of hits is aboutto end and it should be interesting to see if the market resets to howit was before the four week period, or whether the PS3 and Xbox 360have built themselves a higher floor. In second place for PS3, ResidentEvil 5 dropped to about 48,000 units. Yakuza 3 dipped to 21,000 unitsfor the week, and will likely disappear from the preliminary data intwo to three weeks. Expect PS3 hardware sales to dip to the 25,000 to35,000 unit range for the week.

PS2 Software – The PS2 base remains a gold mine for developers who knowhow to exploit niches. Not surprisingly, the three games to chart forthe week on PS2 were either re-releases or special editions. Looking atthe sample preorder data, it is even possible that PS2 will not seeanother game debut to sales of over 100,000 units. Expect PS2 hardwaresales to remain in the 4,000 to 7,000 unit range for the week.
